Tutorial Kool Capture

Using Kool Capture, you will need an utility to change the settings of the webcam.

On MAC : Logitech Camera Settings (free), that you can download here.

On PC : MyCam (free), that you can download here.

I) Starting up the software

First of all, you have to connect your webcam before launching Kool Capture in order that it can be detected.

If you forgot to plug the webcam before launching Kool Capture, plug the webcam and click on the "refresh" button

so that Kool Capture can detect it.

Launch Kool Capture, give a name to your project, a name for the shot and click on "Create Shot". You can also open an existing project by clicking on it.

II) Setting of the webcam

On the top left of the screen, click on

and choose the webcam.

1) For MAC:Logitech WebCam Setting

Then, open Logitech WebCam Setting and make all the settings ( zoom, white balance, focus…), so that the brightness is correct by setting the gain as low as possible.

2) For PC:MyCam

Then open MyCam, click on " Device", choose the webcam and then click "Options" and make all settings so that the brightness is correct by setting the gain as low as possible.

III) The tools of Kool Capture

1) Tools of the liveView:

Activate the LiveView by clicking on

, options and settings will appear

Onion skin:Set the transparency of the liveview

Number of pictures taken at each capture

Take a picture, also possible by pressing the "ENTER" key

Vertical switching of the picture, sometimes useful when the webcam is in the reverse direction.

Horizontal switching of the picture

Timelapse allow to take pictures at a preset time interval. Nota : you must disable the standby mode of your laptop during timelapse.

Display a grid on the screen, useful to have benchmarks for the shot size.

2) Tools of the timeline:

All the pictures taken appear on a sequence under the setting tools. It is possible to select a picture by clicking on it, it will then display on the screen. To select several pictures you just have to press the "SHIFT" key and click on the first and the last picture of your selection. Then, you can apply a lot of options:

Copy picture(s)

Cut a picture or the selection

Paste a picture or the selection before the selected image

Paste a picture or the selection after the selected image

Paste the selection in reverse direction

Reverse the order of the selection

Delete picture(s)

Folder where the all the pictures are saved (including the deleted ones)

Export the sequence :

- in "movie" (not recommanded for the animators). The sequence will be exported in a h264 movie file, only to be used to quickly give the short film to the children without using an editing software. If there was a sound in the shot, you will be given the choice for exporting the video with or without the sound.

- or in "sequence" (recommanded for the animators) . All the images will be exported in high quality in the folder chosen in the export panel, but you have then to process to the editing with a dedicated software ( adobe premiere pro, final cut…) to turn the serie of images into a movie. You will choose the export quality export into the editing sofware.

Import a sound in the sequence

Once you've imported a sound, the name of the sound appears next to the import sound button and you can delete it. This sound will be played when playing the sequence and can be exported in the video if you choose to export the sequence in "movie" and check the checkbox "Export with sound" in the export panel.

3) Tools of control:

Turn on/turn off the short play when activated, useful with shots with a lot of pictures, as it plays only the 15th (default value) last pictures. You can change this number of images for the short playback in the "Preferences" panel. This value is shown in the toolTip while you roll over the button.

Turn on/turn off the display of the liveview at the end of your sequence and let you see if the last picture is correct for the motion you wanted to create.

Viewing buttons.

Number of images per second (12,5 is the recommanded speed).

Playback quality.

allow you to display full screen.

The duration of your animation and the number of pictures taken.

4) Preferences:

Lastly, all the settings are available in the menu at the top end of the screen, notably the choice of language, the number of images for the short playback and the default recording folder:

- on the menu, click on "Kool Capture", "Preferences" and choose the language, the number of images for the short playback and the workspace folder
